How Recruiters and Staffing Agencies Differ

March 13th, 2012

When companies want to staff their firms they can do so in three ways. They can have their own house recruiting department, usually under the HR umbrella. They may also partner with employment or staffing agencies to hire a certain grade of employee because so many positions exist. This is particularly true to retail organizations. Or, a company may choose to turn over all their recruitment and staffing efforts to an in-house but third party employment agency working on their behalf.

The job of the recruiter, staffer, and employment agency positions is the same, it is only the way they are paid that is different. They all post jobs, locate candidates, interview, screen, set up interviews; then place the employee. Their main goal is to successfully fill open positions or soon to be open positions.

Confidential postings may happen when companies are expanding, reorganizing, or replacing, but don’t want it known. With guidance from upper management, normally in HR, these recruiting specialists will also know about and post confidential postings to appropriate websites, with knowledge that an undisclosed termination or replacement is going on behind the scenes.

Once in-house recruiters or staffing teams identify applicants and go through the screening process, they do so in exchange for a wage. Frequently these in-house employees are paid a commission when they meet performance objectives. This differs from when a partner-agency places an employee. If an agency places an employee, they are typically paid a flat fee arrangement based on the placed employee’s salary if they are hired. Employers only pay when someone has been hired.

Jobless folks can sign on with a staffing/employment agency. When they do so, that agency is their employer, and these staffing agencies look for and place their clients within companies. That’s how they make money. Once placed, the employment agency pays everything from salary to taxes and is responsible for the employee’s time-cards. If the employee meets the company’s performance need, an offer of employment may be made. If this happens, the employer pays a percentage of the employee’s annual wage to the agency and the employee is released to the company.

Recruiters and Staffing for Being Hired

February 24th, 2012

When looking for a job, it pays to know recruiters and doing some research. Through numerous business networking sites, potential employees can follow firms that interest them. Recruiters often have LinkedIn profiles where you can connect with them and send your resume. It can be bewildering when looking at job boards, as often it’s difficult to see who is actually posting the job. If you are jobless and want to get hired, start by connecting with recruiters and staffing firms.

Some job boards are just an assembly of every job listed out there. You found it by plunking in certain words or job titles. Notice who is posting what. If it’s a job board, notice the company. Then go to the company site to connect with their recruiter; cut out that middleman. You could inadvertently end up hooked up with a staffing firm and not a company recruiter, so be careful.

Occasionally you’ll read a job posting that has little detail…not even the company name. This typically occurs because the employee that is being ousted doesn’t know it yet. When companies need staffing, they go about it numerous ways. Their internal recruiting department might do it. In those instances, the posting will tell you the company name and the recruiter’s name and there will be no doubt it is an internal recruiter for the firm.

Once a company’s in-house recruiter or staffing team recognizes potential applicants they do the screening steps. If they like your resume, they’ll possibly call to have a phone interview. They may start with an email auto-response of receiving your resume, but not always. The phone interview is step one; if that goes well, they’ll set up a face-to-face or Skype interview. Usually the HR department is where the recruiter works, or if a staffing firm has contacted you, you’ll meet with that firm’s agent.

Staffing recruiters start the ball rolling. Getting the job may mean interviewing with several department heads or executives, depending on the job that you’re applying for. If you get past the recruiter interview, odds are you’ll be scheduled to interview with the boss of the department where your future job would be.
